Introducing Our New Possum Fur-Merino Wool Range

We are delighted to be able to add to our Merino Wool range a collection of socks, gloves and hats that are a Possum Fur-Merino Wool blend from the well-known Norsewear and Duthie & Bull brands.

Possum Fur Merino Wool Blend

But firstly, what is Possum Fur? The common brushtail possum, Trichosurus vulpecula, is a marsupial which is native to Australia. In 1837 some possums were introduced to New Zealand to establish a fur trade. This decision has proven to be a diaster. Possums thrived on New Zealand's green bush and, without any natural predators, their numbers have grown to nearly 48 million. Not only do they have a devastating effect on New Zealand's native bush but native birds, such as the Kiwi, Kokako and Kea, have all been detrimentally affected. They also carry TB which, in turn, can affect cattle herds. This costs farmers NZD$35 million per year and the New Zealand Government spends NZD$110 million per year on possum control. There is a very interesting (and alarming!) map here showing the spread of possums since 1870.

Possum fur is a by-product of the pest control programme and has shown to be hugely popular when blended with Merino Wool. The fur has a hollow structure which allows it to trap air which retains warmth. The fur has a fluffiness as well which makes the garments very soft and luxurious to the touch.

Our range consists of gloves for children and adults, a hat and ski socks and can be found here. All are beautifully made in Norsewood, New Zealand and we feel privileged to be able to bring them to the Irish and European market.
